DAY 1 (Tuesday, August 8, 2017)

STEM On A Budget
Gary Schafer & Michelle Wendt  -  9:00 AM – 11:30 PM

Looking to enhance your STEM curriculum on a limited budget? Learn how to spice-up your classroom activities without breaking the bank. This workshop will show you that cheap STEM projects are possible! You can use budget friendly everyday items and learn how to put together inexpensive STEM ideas and challenges for students. Hands on making of the following items: Electric motor, Robotic Arm, Hydraulic Lift, Make Battery for LED. No expensive kits or electronics, just cardboard, hot glue, clothes hangers, pennies, some tubing and a few batteries.

Wearable Technologies
Gary Schafer & Michelle Wendt  -  12:30 PM – 3:30 PM

The future includes the internet of things (IoT) and e-textiles! Wearable technologies are not just for tracking your health and fitness. Discover the potential of wearable technology in e-textiles with this introductory workshop designed for teachers with no electronics or programming experience. Provides a hands-on opportunity to explore how this innovative technology can be used to enhance a garment or accessory.  Participants will have a project to take away.

DAY 2 (Wednesday, August 9, 2017)

NGSS & STEM-Perfect Together
Jamie Saponaro  -  9:00 AM – 11:30 PM

STEM opportunities for students are no longer “extra” projects or reserved for enrichment. A focus of NGSS is for the integration of STEM throughout the curriculum, embedded into units to allow for authentic and meaningful experiences for students.   In this workshop, we will explore ways that STEM can be naturally part of the science curriculum.

Global Connect – Collaborative Internet Projects
Jamie Saponaro  -  12:30 PM – 3:30 PM

Build your students’ 4Cs by checking out collaborative Internet projects to join! Collaborative projects use the Internet to its fullest potential by breaking down classroom walls and communicating with students from around the world. These inquiry-oriented, problem-based projects bridge schools, develop a global community, and foster in students the 21st century skills needed for the workforce of the future.  


This workshop is FREE to all GEAR UP Participating Schools. Participants will receive a stipend of $75 per day contingent on full attendance for that day.

You can withdraw from a workshop at no cost, up until two weeks before the workshop date. Please notify us of your cancellation by mail, telephone or fax. Withdrawals within two weeks prior to workshop date will forfeit half of the registration fee. No-shows on the day of the workshop will forfeit the entire registration fee.
