Description: Welcome to the 6th Annual SRI & ETTC Middle & High School Social Studies Conference. We are excited to host the 2020 conference at Stockton University’s Atlantic City Campus. This year’s theme, “Engaging & Empowering Students,” focuses on the importance of student participation in classroom learning, community involvement, and civics education. Brian Brady of the Mikva Challenge is this year’s keynote speaker. In addition to our 2020 theme, an agenda with relevant topics for middle and high school social studies teachers will be offered. Strands will be available for a variety of social studies disciplines. The integration of technology, use of primary sources, and strategies for effective social studies teaching will be included. The conference is a great way to connect and network with social studies colleagues throughout the area.
The SRI & ETTC Middle & High School Social Studies Conference keynote speaker is Mr. Brian Brady.
Brian Brady has led the Mikva Challenge for almost 20 years with the vision of bringing civic empowerment and political participation to all young people, especially low-income youth of color who are often left out of the democratic process. Harvard Professor, Meira Levinson calls Mikva Challenge the "Gold Standard for civic education", and under Brian's leadership, Brian has grown Mikva Challenge programs from a handful of schools in Chicago to one that now engages over 100,000 youth in sixteen states. Brian coined the term "Action Civics" in 2007 to describe the Mikva Challenge process of teaching civics via authentic experiences in the democratic process. He actively partners with numerous civic engagement organizations and leaders to build a movement around energizing youth civic engagement and bringing Action Civics to youth around the country. Currently, Brian is spearheading the expansion of Mikva’s unique model of Action Civics to partner districts across the country. Brian began his career as an educator on the West Side of Chicago teaching in alternative schools and refugee programs and assisting gang involved youth with getting their GED and further schooling or employment.
A continental breakfast and lite lunch will be provided.
