Unique Methods for Teaching Young Children Empathy

Description:

Empathy is a difficult idea to teach to young children. Understanding empathy and appropriate behaviors is more important than ever. Training in empathy needs to be developed and nurtured. Developmentally, an abstract idea such as empathy is difficult for young children to understand. This workshop will provide teachers with the tools to teach young children empathy. Demonstration lessons using hands-on activities will be presented. Participants will leave with lesson plans, copies of materials presented, manipulative ideas and techniques to teach young children appropriate behavior towards others.

The workshop will be presented by Karen Patterson.
Ms. Patterson is a retired elementary teacher. Her interest in teaching empathy to teachers, staff and young children developed through experiences as a mother of a special needs child and through her teaching experiences of twenty-five plus years.
